Slab-on-grade construction refers to the construction of a building on a slab of concrete instead of with a basement. A basement would be a walled space below the building thatthe building sets on. The slab allows the building to set directly on the concrete slab and the flooring of the building to be placed right on top of concrete slab. This style of construction is most popular in locations where there is warmer weather and little or no snow. The slabs work to provide a level construction site for the home and provide a location for the home to be set permanently. In the colder locations a basement is needed in order to provide a warm location for utilities such as a water heater, furnace and plumbing fixtures necessary.
If you are building a new home or constructing a new building, you will need to hire a professional to pour your slab. The slab needs to be according to building code in your area in order to pass inspection and for the building to be given the clearance for habitability. The contractor may be a part of the entire team of contractors that are handling the construction of the building or they may specialize in concrete slabs only. It is important that the slabs are level, set correctly and made so that the home will not have any pitch to it when it is completely constructed. There is a great deal of design that goes into putting a slab on a property for construction purposes.
