Glossary: Branch Circuits
A home’s electrical system has countless feeder wires as well as branch circuits that leave the panel feeding to power devices throughout the home. Because safety is so important, the branch circuits are often considered protection devices for circuits that feed appliances and lighting in a house. These circuits are similar to that of the branches of a tree where part of the system offers protection of the circuit, but does tie directly to a main breaker that supplies power to the entire system.
The branch circuits are individual wire feeds that move from one branch circuit break to the individual electrical load. Each of these circuits comes with a neutral and ground wire to make sure that each circuit as a safe and successful patch of electricity to travel with and also grounding for safety.
Proper care or repair of a home’s electrical system is imperative to maintain proper safety in the home. This is especially true in older homes whose systems may not be up to proper code. A home inspector or electrician can closely inspect the existing system and suggest any changes that will make it work more efficiently or safely. All branch circuit wiring rules are defined by National Electrical Code. Hidden problems within branch circuit wiring can lead to electrocution, equipment failure or fire.
