During construction, framing is considered the fitting of pieces to give the structure both shape and support. The types of framing materials used are often structural steel as well as wood or engineered wood. Platform framing is one of the most important types, which uses wood. Each of the floor levels is framed separately or independent of each other. Wall sections are formed horizontally on the sub-floor prior to their installation, which makes placing studs easier. It also increases the accuracy in which they are installed. Both the top and bottom plated are placed on their end to each stud with two nails. These studs are doubled at the openings for added support.
This type of framing system ensures that each vertical pieces if only a single story high with each part of the floor acting as a platform where the next floor is installed. This is the most common house construction method in North America.
